Pablo Hernandez’s contract at Leeds is set to expire at the end of the season.
Leeds United are running out of time to hand Pablo Hernandez an extended contract at Elland Road despite the playmaker’s excellent form this season, so much so that Paul Heckingbottom must begin to draw up a shortlist of replacements.
The 33-year-old – a four-time Spain international – has scored nine goals and turned provider on a further 10 occasions this season, but bizarrely Leeds are yet to offer the former Valencia star a new deal.
Talks are said to be underway according to reports, but the clock is certainly ticking with little over two months before Hernandez can walk on a free.
Foreign clubs can approach the former Swansea City star on a free transfer, and English clubs will be allowed to do the same in the final month of his current deal.
So, Heckingbottom needs to consider a few replacements just in case the worst for Leeds fans does happen, and Hernandez walks. A short-term, like-for-like playmaker would be perfect – step forward, Wes Hoolahan.
The 35-year-old Norwich City star confirmed earlier this week that he would leave Carrow Road at the end of the season after a decade in east Anglia, with his current deal set to expire at the end of the season – like Hernandez’s contract.
Ireland international Hoolahan is almost an exact replica of Hernandez. He offers ability with both feet, intricate footwork and close dribbling, as well as goals, assists and an array of passing unmatched at this level.
Available on a free, Heckingbottom should look to convince owner Andrea Radrizzani to turn to Hoolahan as his first choice on 12-month deal if Hernandez and Leeds cannot come to an agreement.
