Former Ibrox manager Ally McCoist has given his take on John Kennedy’s comments that Celtic have a better team than Steven Gerrard’s Rangers, as quoted in GlasgowLive.

As quoted on MSN recently, Celtic interim-manager Kennedy has said that the Hoops “are still the best team in the country” on their day, despite bitter Old Firm rivals Rangers having already won the Scottish Premiership title this season.

GlasgowLive quotes McCoist, who now works as a pundit for BBC Sports and BT Sports, as saying: “He’s got to back up his team. I would be sitting here criticising him if he said Rangers were the best team and Celtic were up against it.

“He’s stayed loyal to a team who played very well at Ibrox and looked the better side for long periods of the game last time, so I can take his point, I know what he’s saying. He’s trying to give his team a boost.

“But, from where I’m sitting, if Rangers win the league by 10, 12 points, whatever, you have to say they’re the best team in the league.

“They have been the best team by some considerable distance. Their league campaign would indicate they’re the best team in the country.”

Understandable from John Kennedy?

Neutrals will look at the situation in the Scottish Premiership now, and most, if not all, will say that Rangers have been the best team in Scotland this season.

After all, Gerrard’s side wrapped up the league title last month and ended Celtic’s hopes of winning the championship for the 10th year in a row.

What Kennedy is doing by his comments is sticking with the Celtic players and urging them to show what they are capable of.

The Celtic interim-manager publicly backing his players is a good way to boost their confidence ahead of the Scottish Cup tie against Rangers at Ibrox this weekend.

Moreover, no manger or interim-manager of Celtic will ever actually admit that Old Firm rivals Rangers are better.
