Liverpool’s transfer deadline day was very exciting as they announced the arrivals of Ben Davies and Ozak Kabak at Anfield.
However, it very nearly didn’t end up that way.
Indeed, Fabrizio Romano claims that Liverpool’s negotiations with Ozan Kabak weren’t all that straightforward, and that at one point Liverpool even turned their attentions to Braga defender David Carmo, making an offer for him during Kabak’s medical.
Fortunately, Liverpool opted to continue their pursuit of Kabak rather than signing Carmo, and that may end up proving to be an absolute masterstroke from Michael Edwards.
Edwards has made a long-list of brilliant decisions at Liverpool, and it looks as though this is another one to add to that list.
Kabak looks to be the better signing than Carmo. After all, he’s more experienced and people within Liverpool believe he can make the step up in the same way Andy Robertson did when he came in from Hull.
Carmo is by no means a bad player, but he’s only played 38 senior games in his career, while Kabak has played over double that.
Factor in the fact that Carmo’s loan fee would have been over three times as much as Kabak’s and it’s easy to see that a move for Kabak made a lot more sense.
Luckily for Liverpool, Edwards also saw it that way and they captured the services of the Turkish centre-half rather than Carmo.
If Romano’s retelling of what happened on deadline day is accurate, then Edwards deserves massive credit for making the right decision.
Some in Edwards’ position would have panicked and pulled the trigger on Carmo as the deadline approached and the Kabak deal hit a snag, but Edwards remained focused on his number one target and eventually got his man.
