After what can only be described as an underwhelming season for Arsenal, this summer transfer window will be a crucial one for the Gunners.

The London club look set to finish mid-table, and they need to have a real think about reshaping their squad.

However, there are some positions that don’t need to be tinkered with, but if Fabrizio Romano’s story is correct, Arsenal could be about to make a transfer error.

Indeed, the journalist claims that Arsenal will be going for a new centre-back if David Luiz leaves the club.

“Keep an eye also on a potential new centre-back for Arsenal. They are also considering a move for a new centre-back if David Luiz is not staying,” Romano said.

“Everything will depend on David Luiz, nothing has been decided yet. At the end of the season, they will decide about David Luiz but if he will leave, for sure Arsenal will go for a new centre-back.”

On the surface, going out and buying a replacement for David Luiz if he leaves doesn’t seem like too bad of an idea, but in Arsenal’s case it could be a tremendous waste of time and money.

Luiz hasn’t been Arsenal’s first-choice centre-half this season, starting less than half of their games in the Premier League, and the fact of the matter is that Arsenal have a lot of depth in that area.

Gabriel Magalhaes, Rob Holding, Pablo Mari and Calum Chambers can all do a job there right now, but what makes the idea of bringing in a new centre-back if Luiz departs sound ludicrous is the fact that William Saliba is also on the books.

Let’s not forget that the French youngster is a £27m player, and he’s been earning all sorts of plaudits during his loan spell with Nice.

Saliba could easily come in and take up Luiz’s spot as the third-choice centre-back at Arsenal, so it would make very little sense for the Gunners to go out and spend good money on a Luiz replacement when they already have an in-house solution.
