Romelu Lukaku looks set to leave Everton after rejecting a new contract, so perhaps the Toffees should cash in and pursue one of Europe’s most lethal forwards.

Everton fans were somewhat rocked by the news that Romelu Lukaku has turned down a new contract at Goodison Park (via BBC Sport). And while selling the Belgian would be a setback to their ambitions of pushing towards the top four, there is perhaps an ideal replacement currently tearing defences apart in France.

Alexandre Lacazette has been one of Europe’s most lethal goalscorers over the past few years. The 25-year-old has scored 70 times in just 90 Ligue 1 games for Lyon over the past three seasons, including a staggering 22 in 23 this term.

While some would suggest that the French top flight is not as difficult as the Premier League, his record certainly proves that he knows how to find the back of the net, and that attribute should allow him to thrive whatever division he is playing in.

According to BBC Sport, Everton will want at least £60 million before they agree to sell Lukaku, while a recent report from the Daily Mirror suggests that Lyon want a similar figure for their talisman, so it could turn out to be a smart piece of business if Lacazette can replicate his current form were he to arrive in England.

And if Lacazette arrives with the kind of desire to play for the Toffees that Lukaku perhaps no longer has – there is however, no reason to suggest that he does not necessarily plan to sign a new contract at some point in the future – then that may help galvanise Ronald Koeman’s men, and may perhaps help them achieve that goal of pushing further up the table.
