Do Arsenal ever learn?

The Gunners have found themselves in trouble time after time due to their tendency to offer ageing stars big contracts, so, of course, it makes sense that they’re now being linked with a move for Diego Costa.

Now, we’re not saying that Costa is a bad player. After all, in his pomp, he was one of the most deadly strikers in the Premier League, but at the age of 33, Costa isn’t the player he once was.

He’s scored just 18 goals in all competitions since 2018, and there’s a reason that he’s been released by each of his last two clubs.

To make matters worse, this move is all too predictable.

Indeed, Arsenal could be about to complete one of the worst transfer hat-tricks in football history.

The Gunners have already signed two Brazilians who were key to Jose Mourinho’s title-winning Chelsea side, and it’s fair to say that both Willian and David Luiz didn’t live up to expectations.

Of course, it’s not fair to typecast a player just because of where they’re from and who they used to play for, but it’s really hard to ignore the comparisons between Costa, Luiz and Willian.

Luiz and Willian both signed for Arsenal once they were past their best and eventually moved to Brazil, where things aren’t going brilliantly for either player.

Costa is one step beyond where Luiz and Willian are now – he’s actually been released by the club that brought him back to Brazil, but for some reason, Arsenal seem to view him as a potential option this month.

In our view, this is an absolute recipe for disaster. Costa hasn’t shown that he’s up to standard for the past four years, and if Edu isn’t careful and decides to bring him in, he could follow in Willian’s footsteps by being a big-name Brazilian failure who was once a star at Chelsea.
