The Republic of Ireland international faces added competition following the signing of Hull City defender Curtis Davies, while others have been linked.

When Derby County announced the signing of Curtis Davies from Hull City, it became apparent that new boss Gary Rowett wants to change the defence – and that could mean an end for Republic of Ireland international Richard Keogh.
With Newcastle United defender Grant Hanley also strongly linked with the club, with the Derby Telegraph reporting that there is still a £4m offer on the table for the centre half despite Davies’ signing, it’s very possible that Davies and Hanley could be Rowett’s first choice centre back partnership – which wouldn’t be a bad thing.
Derby’s Richard Keogh
Keogh has often split opinion amongst Rams fans, with a small section never quite forgiving him for his error in the 2014 play-off final – where he essentially assisted Bobby Zamora in the 90th minute – while others feel that he is made to be a scapegoat for the team and does a better job than people let on.
The last four games of the season could’ve been what prompted Rowett to contemplate bringing in two centre backs. Keogh bounced back from a poor game against the Rams’ fierce rivals Nottingham Forest with three better performances against Queens Park Rangers, Fulham and Birmingham City.

It could be that inconsistency which made Rowett decide that a new back line was in order, which is something Keogh may not adapt to well having played 48 times for the Rams in all competitions last season as a key man.
However, by taking Keogh out of the team for two quality and consistent Championship level defenders in Davies and Hanley, Derby could reap huge benefits from that and could even challenge top two – even if it means coming at the expense of their captain.
