This week has again seen Newcastle United defender Jamaal Lascelles linked with a move to Chelsea. The Blues are said to be keen on the Newcastle captain, as they look to bolster their backline.

Lascelles has been brilliant for Newcastle this season and the fans at the club would hate to see him go. But with Chelsea knocking at the door it will be hard to convince him to stay at St James’ Park and financially the Blues could offer a handsome fee for the Newcastle captain.

So if Newcastle are going to sell Lascelles, they must make sure they get the best deal possible from Chelsea – and not only financially.

Newcastle are of course interested in one Chelsea player, Brazilian left-winger Kenedy. So they would do well to ask for him as part of any deal.

Instead of having to pay a big fee to get Kenedy in at Newcastle, the club could easily make money off the sale of Lascelles and bring the Brazilian in to St James’ Park as well.

He has been excellent since making a loan move to the club and with Chelsea signing Emerson in the transfer window it seems his days at Stamford Bridge could be numbered.

Of course in a dream world, Newcastle would rather have Chelsea throw Michy Batshuayi or Gary Cahill into any deal, but given their aspirations and wages, such a deal would be highly improbable.

If they have to bend, and let Lascelles move to Chelsea, then ensuring Kenedy is made a permanent fixture on Tyneside would be a smart move and at least a small consolation for losing such a pivotal player.
