A recent report from the Chronicle suggested that Celtic were closing in on a deal to sign Sunderland forward Fabio Borini due to a £6 million relegation release clause in the Italian’s contract at the Stadium of Light.

While Borini’s difficult time with the Black Cats may leave many Hoops fans concerned about whether the 26-year-old may turn out to be an expensive flop if he does move to Parkhead, the impact that Brendan Rodgers has had on Scott Sinclair should give Celtic fans plenty of hope.

Sinclair arrived at Celtic one year ago for a fee of £3 million (via Guardian). Despite playing for the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City during his career, it would have been understandable if a large number of fans were sceptical about the deal with the forward having just been a part of the Aston Villa side that were comfortably relegated from the top flight.

Fast forward 12 months and Borini has just been a part of the Sunderland squad that went down to the Championship having looked destined for the drop all year.

Sinclair has gone on to enjoy a stunning first season at Celtic, scoring 21 league goals and helping the Hoops win the domestic treble and go through the whole campaign unbeaten in games against Scottish opposition.

Like Sinclair before his switch to Celtic, Borini arguably enjoyed the best spell of his career so far while working with Rodgers, scoring six goals in nine games while on loan with Swansea, so there is perhaps no reason why he cannot rediscover that form again if he does end up in the Scottish Premiership, especially as it was alongside Sinclair where he looked so good with the Swans.

And if a deal does go through and Rodgers can transform Borini’s career like he has with Sinclair, then the fans will reflect that it was £6 million brilliantly spent.
