Some Arsenal fans on Twitter are calling on Mikel Arteta to start Mat Ryan ahead of Bernd Leno in tonight’s Europa League semi-final with Villarreal.
Arsenal’s season rests on winning this competition and some fans of the North London club feel that Ryan is a better option than Leno between the sticks.
The former Bayer Leverkusen goalkeeper, a £22 million signing in 2018, made another howler last week when he allowed Richarlison’s low cross to go through his legs in the Gunners’ 1-0 defeat by Everton at the Emirates Stadium.
It wasn’t the first mistake that Leno has made this season.
In fact, it wasn’t even the first mistake that the 29-year-old has made this year, having been sent off at Wolves a few months ago for racing out of his own box to commit a foul.
Arsenal signed Ryan on a half-season loan from Brighton in January in a swoop that shocked some fans of the North London club due to the fact there was virtually no speculation about it happening before it was announced.
And although the Australia international has only played in two Premier League games since joining, he impressed in both.
Here’s what some Arsenal fans are saying about who Arteta should give the gloves to tonight:
This is all good and well, but is Arteta going to drop the German stopper? In a word, nope.
The Arsenal boss is a big fan of Leno, evident by the fact that Emiliano Martinez was allowed to leave last summer despite playing a big role in the club’s FA Cup win.
Even after his error against Everton last Friday, Arteta defended him and therefore it’s hard to see Leno being axed.
