The Blues are currently second in the table after five games.
Everton midfielder Idrissa Gueye has told Sky Sports that the club’s objective is to simply keep themselves at the top of the table.
The Blues have made a flying start to the season under new manager Ronald Koeman, who took charge of the club in the summer.
So far they have amassed 13 points from their first five games, a tally that leaves them sitting second in the table behind Manchester City.
Their strong start has naturally excited the Everton fans, who are quietly dreaming of a Champions League push or better from their side.
Manager Ronald Koeman has moved to dispel such talk but Gueye has insisted that the team’s aim is to simply keep the Blues as close to the top of the table as possible.
“The objective is to keep Everton towards the top,” he told Sky Sports.
“Everton is not a small club and we have to give our very best throughout the season and hopefully achieve something. I am here to play football and bring the best I can, whether that is bringing the title to Goodison we will have to see.”
It would certainly be unwise for Everton to get ahead of themselves at this early stage in the season.
This strong start does suggest that they could be in for a good year but things can drastically go the other way also.
Aston Villa are the perfect example. In the 2014-15 season, they had ten points at this stage but ended up in 17th place just three points from safety by the end of the campaign.
That is a clear indication of how things can quickly turn around and Everton would be wise to bear that in mind this year.
