Idrissa Gueye says Gareth Barry’s real brains of Everton, comments on fans

Idrissa Gueye joined Everton in the summer transfer window.

Everton defensive midfielder Idrissa Gueye has told The Times that he is lucky to have Gareth Barry playing alongside him.

Gueye, who joined Everton from Championship club Aston Villa in the summer transfer window, has formed a strong midfield partnership with Barry this season.

The 27-year-old has stated that the 35-year-old Englishman is the real brain of the Toffees. The Senegal international has also said that he hopes that Barry plays for a few more years.

“I’m lucky to have him on my side,” Gueye told The Times about playing with Barry. “I remember playing against him last season and I could never get the ball off him.

“Let’s hope he keeps his fitness and form for the next few years. He’s the real brains of this side and when he plays well, we play well.”

Gueye has also stated that the support of Everton fans has motivated him to step up his game and improve.

“It is great there are still fans like that, people who appreciate when someone works hard — and it has been a way of inspiring me to work even harder, become even more useful for my teammates,” the former Lille midfielder told The Times.

“I’m hoping to have a really good season, because I’m convinced I’ve made a really good choice. I’m at a club that perfectly suits my style.”

Barry is an underrated midfielder, but the Englishman remains important to Everton.

The former Villa and Manchester City man keeps the Toffees ticking in midfield, and his importance is only going to grow as the season progresses.

Everton are sixth in the Premier League table at the moment with 18 points from 10 matches.

The Merseyside outfit are just four points behind Chelsea, who are currently fourth in the standings and occupy the final Champions League spot.

Ronald Koeman’s will return to action on Saturday evening when they take on Chelsea away from home at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League.
