Everton midfielder Idrissa Gueye has told the club’s official website that he is hopeful Morgan Schneiderlin will remain at Goodison Park next season in order to continue his excellent recent form – despite Schneiderlin’s comments last month.

Gueye was full of praise for the France international after partnering the 28-year-old star in midfield during the Toffees’ comfortable 2-0 win over Huddersfield on Saturday.

Former Aston Villa star Gueye scored a rare goal, while Cenk Tosun also continued to rediscover his shooting boots with his fifth strike since joining Everton in January from Besiktas.

Schneiderlin told French media that he could leave Everton last month: “If I have to leave Everton, I’d like a different challenge than the Premier League. Since I come from there, I keep an eye on Strasbourg, but when I was younger, I always supported Marseille.”

But Gueye is hoping that the former Southampton and Manchester United midfielder opts to remain on Merseyside and instead continue his fantastic level of performance in recent outings.

“Morgan is in good form and that is good for the team because he is an important player,” Gueye said. “We know that. If he is playing like that, it is better for the team because he can keep the ball well. Hopefully he will keep that form for next season. We like to play together.”

Schneiderlin still has three years remaining on the four-and-a-half-year contract he signed in January 2017, after moving from Old Trafford to Goodison Park for a fee of £20million. The Daily Star claims he earns £120,000 a week.

Both Gueye and Schneiderlin are expected to start on Saturday as Everton go up against relegation candidates Southampton at home, in a match that Allardyce will be confident of taking three points.
