Idrissa Gueye has admitted to Aawsat that he was waiting for someone to show an interest for him this summer, when Everton came in for him.

Gueye appeared to have no interest in staying at Aston Villa, after their relegation from the Premier League was confirmed.

And the central midfielder admits that he found things very difficult during his season as a Villa player.

“I want to thank my family and friends for supporting me during a very difficult time last season at Aston Villa,” he said.

“It was a difficult period with the results and relegation and afterwards I was waiting for a new club to come in for me. They were all supporting me and praying for me and here we are today.

“I would also like to say thanks to the manager and Steve and everyone at Everton who made the move happen.”

Gueye was part of a Villa side who were abject in the Premier League last season, and he failed to show his best performance levels.

However, Everton still managed to spot his talent, and he became one of Ronald Koeman’s first additions last summer.

Gueye has gone on to become one of the bargain buys of the previous transfer window, and he is already playing a crucial role at Everton.

The Senegalese international has forced his way into Koeman’s starting line-up, and he already looks like a key player, with his impressive form helping Everton climb into fifth position in the Premier League table.

Everton are next in action on Friday evening, when they face Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.
