Newcastle fans have taken to Twitter in confusion after The Times revealed that Dwight Gayle has signed a new three-year contract.
The Times claim that the deal is all wrapped up, but is yet to be formally announced by the Magpies.
Gayle was set to become a free agent in June, although it seems Newcastle have moved to prevent that from happening.
Now, a lot of supporters are baffled by the club’s decision.
Why?
Well, Steve Bruce barely plays the 31-year-old, so it seems odd that he would be handed such a lengthy contract extension.

Gayle is still an asset and would probably fetch a decent fee from a promotion-chasing Championship outfit, given his fine record in England’s second tier.
However, if Newcastle were aiming to simply preserve his value, then why not just offer him a one-year deal?
The £10 million signing from Crystal Palace has only started four Premier League games this season.

Gayle has struggled to get into the starting XI ahead of Joelinton and Callum Wilson, and it seemed like he might be leaving Tyneside this summer.
Now, the Magpies are stuck with a fringe player for at least another three years, and the Newcastle fans have been left in disbelief as a result.
Let’s see what they’ve been saying after The Times revealed the news…
