Everton manager Ronald Koeman is under increasing pressure.
Pundit Chris Sutton has told the Daily Mail that he thinks Everton boss Ronald Koeman could lose his job during the international break after Sunday’s 1-0 defeat to Burnley.
The Toffees slipped to another defeat on Sunday, as Jeff Hendrick’s calm finish from a superb Burnley move put the Clarets in front in the first half – and gave them all three points.
Everton struggled to trouble Burnley throughout, and with another tepid attacking performance, manager Koeman finds himself under huge pressure in the Goodison Park dugout.
The Dutchman was backed heavily over the summer transfer window with signings such as Jordan Pickford, Michael Keane, Gylfi Sigurdsson and ex-Toffees hero Wayne Rooney, but results have been torrid so far.
With four defeats from seven Premier League games and just two wins to their name, Everton are at the wrong end of the Premier League table, and it’s hard to see Koeman turning things around right now.
Majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri is still behind Koeman, but Everton were not only booed off against Burnley on Sunday, but also against Apollon Limassol in the 2-2 Europa League draw on Thursday night.
Now, pundit Chris Sutton has told the Daily Mail that he thinks Koeman could be sacked during the international break, as he struggled to see him in charge of Everton for their next league game against Brighton and Hove Albion, with the break the ideal time for a change.
Sutton criticised director of football Steve Walsh too, suggesting that the club’s recruitment has been poor, but he simply doesn’t know how much longer the Everton board can continue to put up with such poor results having backed Koeman financially over the summer.
“Ronald Koeman’s days are numbered at Everton. In truth, I struggle to see him lasting the international break,” said Sutton. “Everton’s next game is a trip to Brighton. On this form, with Koeman in charge, would you have any confidence they would get a result? I do not like to see managers lose their jobs, particularly early in the season. Frank de Boer was given no time at Crystal Palace but the situation is different with Koeman.”
“He has had his feet under the table since the start of last season and has had money to spend. When you pay out close to £150million, you do not get the luxury of time. With expectations so high, Koeman needed players to hit the ground running. Instead, in their last 10 games Everton have won just twice — a streaky win over Bournemouth and a victory over Sunderland in the League Cup.”
“They have lost four of their seven Premier League games and it is the manner of the defeats which is most concerning. Everton had plenty of time to replace Romelu Lukaku but somehow they have bought three No 10s — Wayne Rooney, Davy Klaassen and Gylfi Sigurdsson — and no striker. Rooney was heralded as their marquee signing but yesterday against Burnley, Koeman thought he only warranted a place on the bench. For how much longer will the board back Koeman to turn things around? The international break may be the logical time for them to make a change,” he added.
