Benfica striker Haris Seferovic said that he still dreams of playing Premier League football after being linked with a move to West Bromwich Albion, while speaking to Blue Sport, via Record.
Yet if the Baggies are serious about luring the Swiss international to England, an immediate return to the Championship would not exactly aid their cause.
Seferovic wants to test his mettle against Liverpool rather than Luton, after all.
The Express and Star reported a few weeks ago that the well-travelled 28-year-old was a target for Sam Allardyce’s West Brom side.
And, if they can emulate the ‘Great Escape’ of 2005, the Midland outfit would be well placed to make a tempting offer for Seferovic.
That, however, is a big ‘if’. West Brom are currently 12 points adrift of safety, with just a third of the season remaining.
“I feel very comfortable here. Portugal is a very beautiful country and Benfica a great club where they play to win titles in all seasons. For me and my family everything fits here,” said Seferovic, who has scored 12 goals this season and won the Portuguese title in 2019.
“Still, I can’t say for sure that I will fulfil my contract with Benfica. I admit that there is a league that I would very much like to go to. Which one? The Premier League!
“I have seen a lot in my career and I have played in Germany, Spain, Italy and Portugal.”
Seferovic has another three years left on his contract and Benfica will be under no pressure to sell at the end of this season.
Even if West Brom do manage to reel in the likes of Newcastle and climb out of the drop zone, the Baggies will certainly be in the market for a new number nine.
Mbaye Diagne is only on loan until July, while Karlan Grant has scored just one top-flight goal since joining from Huddersfield Town.
