For large parts, it has been a tough 18 or so months for Tottenham because they have seen the break up of a once-great Mauricio Pochettino side.

Slowly but surely, it is being stripped apart, but yesterday, Spurs fans on Twitter got emotional after a picture emerged with some of their current and former players together.

Following the conclusion of Belgium’s 2-0 win over Denmark in the UEFA Nations League, Jan Vertonghen, Toby Alderweireld, Christian Eriksen, and the newbie, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, were seen talking to one another after the match.

Whilst Hojbjerg wasn’t part of that great, vibrant, attacking side that Pochettino built, the other three were, but two have since departed.

Eriksen left for Inter Milan in January, whilst Vertonghen’s contract in North London ran out this summer and he has since joined Benfica.

Looking back on that team, it will always remain a mystery as to how they never managed to lift any piece of silverware.

Tottenham Hotspur’s summer signings

  1. Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg

    £15 million; Southampton

  2. Joe Hart

    Free

  3. Matt Doherty

    £13 million; Wolves

  4. Sergio Reguilon

    £25 million; Real Madrid

  5. Gareth Bale

    Loan; Real Madrid

  6. Carlos Vinicius

    Loan; Benfica

  7. Joe Rodon

    £12 million; Swansea

They had the unstoppable goal-scoring machine Harry Kane being fed balls from all angles by Eriksen and Pochettino’s hardworking fullbacks.

Whilst a young and unorthodox Dele Alli was making himself known, along with the underrated ball-carrier Mousa Dembele, who would power past any player in the middle of the park.

Added with that, Spurs had a Belgian duo in defence, who were technically gifted, composed and much-wanted by other top European clubs.

That’s just a glimpse of the great side the North London club had, and it’s a shame they didn’t win a domestic trophy to top things off.
