Paul Merson has stated that he doesn’t think Newcastle United will finish above Arsenal next season.

Although, the former title-winner added that Newcastle ‘won’t be in the position’ they found themselves in during the recently-concluded campaign.

Arsenal finished the 2021/22 Premier League campaign in fifth place – a Europa League spot – six places above Newcastle and 20 points ahead of Eddie Howe’s side.

That’s some jump for the Magpies to make, but given the recent investment in the club and their vast improvement during the second half of the campaign, many are thinking something very different from Newcastle.

As a result, Merson was asked if he thinks they can finish above Arsenal next term and he issued this response on Sky Sports News.

“I would probably say no, they won’t finish above Arsenal, over 38 game season,” said Merson.

“But they won’t be in the position they were this season. I thought they were absolutely outstanding.

“I thought some of their recruitment. Bruno is a proper player, Joelinton has worked coming into midfield. I like Newcastle now.”

NEWCASTLE LOOKING TO MAKE STRIDES NEXT SEASON

If Newcastle start the next campaign, like they finished this season, then they will upset those at the top.

Arsenal could be a team in their firing line because they are in Europe and it’s going to be interesting how they cope with playing Thursday’s and then on Sunday’s.

Added with that, Newcastle will be looking to pump some serious money in the market – Hugo Ekitike is a player mentioned, as well as Benfica hitman, Darwin Nunez.

All in all, those at St James’ Park will be the main event during the summer transfer market that could see them make serious leaps in the Premier League table.
