Paul Warne has admitted while speaking to the Star he would “love” to bring Dan Barlaser back to Rotherham if he has no future at Premier League outfit Newcastle United.
The 23-year-old academy graduate has yet to make an appearance for the Magpies since the 2016/17 season.
But, if he has ambitions of finally forcing his way into the first-team picture on Tyneside, he has certainly gone about things the right way.
Barlaser recently returned to Newcastle after a great loan spell at Rotherham, firing the Millers to promotion with five assists and a fabulous free-kick or two at League One level.
The Chronicle even suggests the Gateshead-born midfielder could be offered a fresh start by Steve Bruce at St James’ Park.
Warne is likely to make an enquiry or two before the transfer window slams shut as the Rotherham boss hopes to thrive rather than just survive in the Championship.

“Dan is chasing his dream to get into the Newcastle squad,” Warne said. “If he doesn’t get into the Newcastle squad, I’d love to take him.
“Whether I can beat competition for him I don’t know. I have to wait until I get the green light from Newcastle and the player that he’s available.”
Isaac Hayden, Jonjoe Shelvey and Sean Longstaff are all ahead of Barlaser in Newcastle’s pecking order, while the previously out-of-contract Matty Longstaff has also committed his future to the north east giants.
But, with his contract due to expire in 2021, it makes little sense for Newcastle to loan Barlaser out again before losing him for free next summer.
Give him a run in the first-team or cash in – those are the two best options for Bruce right now.
