‘I’d love to be there’: Deeney makes Tottenham transfer claim & admits Mourinho talks

Troy Deeney has told TalkSport Breakfast (21/10/10 at 7:10 am) that there was genuine interest from Tottenham for his services this summer.

The Watford striker shared that he spoke with Jose Mourinho when his side met Spurs in a pre-season friendly before the start of this current campaign.

Deeney was relegated with Watford last season, and given his experience and ability to provide something different, it’s understandable why he would attract interest from those in the top-flight.

Now that the summer transfer window has slammed shut, Deeney spoke honestly about those Spurs links and admitted that he was thinking he would ‘love to be there’ when he was watching the Amazon documentary.

“Yes, [it’s genuine],” Deeney told TalkSport. “I’m 32. A lot of clubs were looking for a different style of striker as a backup. Obviously, everyone wants to play a certain way now.

“But when you get into certain moments then you need someone who can hold it up or go long if you’re losing, so yes there was a lot of talks. Some things materialised and some things didn’t.

“The ones that were getting closer then you start thinking ‘are you ready to go back to the Premier League to be a bit-part player?’ When you start getting into the mould of being a super-sub, you cannot really go back.

On whether he spoke with Mourinho: “I saw Jose at the Watford v Spurs game, pre-season. That’s all I say.

“When you get to Spurs, you know the difference between being at a lesser club and a big club with the big boys, so it’s a different experience. I think we all watched the Amazon thing and we was like ‘oh, I’d love to be there’. The training ground is ridiculous and the stadium is ridiculous.

“You want to test yourself as well. I am not going to go in there and say ‘I am better than Harry Kane’. Come on, we all know. I am a realist. It is what is. I know what I can deliver.”

Deeney will now focus on trying to help Watford return to England’s top-flight, at the first time of asking.

As for Spurs, they ended up signing Carlos Vinicius from Benfica and not forgetting the return of Gareth Bale.

Whilst Deeney didn’t move to North London, Mourinho did manage to persuade Daniel Levy to add the much-needed depth that was needed in his forward line.
