Sheffield United maestro John Fleck has admitted that he would ‘love’ to return to former club Rangers later on in his career, speaking to former Ibrox team-mate Kris Boyd for Sky Sports.

It’s fair to say few Gers fans would have expected, when a young midfielder left Glasgow to join Coventry City on a free transfer in 2012, that Fleck would be one of the Premier League’s most influential performers less than a decade later.

Fleck is playing in England’s top flight for the very first time – not that you’d have guessed it.

The 28-year-old Scot has been an irrepressible presence at the heart of a high-flying Sheffield United side who, before a promising campaign was brought to a shuddering halt, were dreaming of European football at Bramall Lane for the very first time.

Fleck recently signed a three-year deal at Sheffield United to put an end to speculation linking him with Arsenal, meaning the two-time Scotland international is not going anywhere just yet.

But if Rangers come calling one day, a second chance at Ibrox may be impossible to turn down.

“I’m very happy at Sheffield United and, as long as that continues, then great. But if a chance was to come later on down the line to come back to Rangers then I would love it to be honest,” says Fleck, who made 41 league appearances for the club between 2007 to 2012.

“I’ve got great memories of the club. It was a very successful team at the time. It was very difficult for any young kid to come through.”

Even before the crisis which has plunged Scottish football into an unprecedented financial nightmare, Rangers would have struggled to pay the sort of fee Sheffield United are looking for.

But given that Allan McGregor, Steven Davis and Kyle Lafferty have been offered a return to familiar surroundings in recent times, do not rule out the prospect of Fleck donning the royal blue again some time soon.
