Michael Owen has claimed that Mohamed Salah will be signing a new contract at Liverpool.
Salah’s long-term future at Liverpool is in some doubt.
The 29-year-old attacker is out of contract at Anfield in summer of 2023 and unfortunately for the Reds there seems to be an impasse in negotiations between the club and player.
It seems like a money issue is preventing the Egypt international and Merseysiders from striking an arrangement.
However, Owen is confident that Salah will wind up extending his stay at Liverpool, claiming that virtually any move away from Jurgen Klopp’s side is a backwards step for the attacker.
He told BBC Sport: “I’d be very surprised if Mo Salah didn’t sign with Liverpool. What are the options at the moment? You are only going either sideways to Manchester City or down anywhere else because there is no-one else as good as these two teams in the world at the moment.
“Let’s give everyone time because these things don’t happen overnight.”
What an enormous boost it would be for Liverpool if they could tie him down.
However, it might not be as cut and dry as Owen believes it to be.
You could argue that nobody in world football is better than the Reds at this moment in time, but the likes of Real Madrid, Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain remain massive clubs and two of them, Real and PSG, could very easily tempt Salah to their shores.
In an ideal world, Liverpool will pay the player what he wants to stay on Merseyside but Owen shouldn’t be fooled into believing that he has no options, just because Klopp’s side are better than all three of those aforementioned outfits.
