Paul Merson is certain that Antonio Conte is the manager to end Tottenham Hotspur’s trophy drought in North London, claiming that he’d be ‘shocked’ if he didn’t.

Tottenham made a massive statement in November by hiring the legendary Italian manager.

Conte, who replaced Nuno Espirito Santo, joined Spurs with an impressive CV, having won a Premier League title with Chelsea and four other Serie A crowns.

And there’s no doubt that the Lilywhites are playing much better under the former Inter Milan manager than they were under Nuno – and also running a lot more.

Tottenham are six points behind fourth-placed Arsenal but they also have three games in hand.

Getting back into the Champions League will be Conte’s short-term goal in North London but, according to Merson, the 52-year-old will also win a trophy within two years, with Spurs failing on this front since way back in 2008.

He said to The Star: “Tottenham are going to win trophies with Antonio Conte. They have finally found the right manager. I’d be shocked if they don’t win any silverware in the next two years with him in charge because you can see it’s starting to click for them.”

His first trophy could potentially come early in 2022.

Conte has guided Tottenham to the semi final of the League Cup after beating West Ham United in midweek.

Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea – who won the Champions League last season – await Spurs in a two-legged affair.

Beating the Blues will be extremely difficult but, as mentioned, Conte has Spurs looking very well drilled and organised and no doubt it’ll be tough for Tuchel’s outfit too.
