The Athletic journalist Phil Hay has made an interesting prediction about Marcelo Bielsa’s future at Leeds United as his contract once again ticks towards expiring.

The Argentine has only ever signed one year deals at Elland Road, meaning that every year he is free to leave unless he negotiates new terms, and up to now, that hasn’t been a problem.

However, with Bielsa rarely staying at clubs for long spells and the ex-Marseille boss now being 65 years old, Leeds fans understandably have concerns about whether or not he’ll be staying.

Understandably, that’s a topic Hay was asked about during his Q&A session ahead of the Everton game on Wednesday, and he believes that Bielsa will want to continue next season.

“Without tempting fate, I’d be really surprised if Bielsa didn’t want to carry on. He looks full of energy, his team still look vibrant and he seems very engaged,” Hay wrote.

This is great news for any Leeds fan to hear.

Bielsa has been the catalyst for Leeds’ transformation in recent years, and the fact that a journalist as well-connected as Hay thinks he’ll stay on is a very good sign.

Of course, whether or not he does remains to be seen, but we have to echo Hay’s sentiment and ask, why wouldn’t he?

Leeds are a few signings away from really competing for a European spot in the Premier League, and while Bielsa has done a great job so far, he surely wouldn’t want to leave when the next big milestone may not be that far away.

Fingers crossed Hay is right and Bielsa stays at Leeds.
