Garth Crooks has told BBC Sport that Tottenham Hotspur’s chairman Daniel Levy must be ‘fuming’ over Sheffield United’s late winner this week.
John Egan produced a last-minute ‘thunderous’ header as the Blades beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 1-0 at Bramall Lane.
In doing so, the Irishman’s dramatic winner ensured that Chris Wilder’s side leapfrog Tottenham – and Arsenal – in the Premier League table.
United’s biggest player in terms of salary is Phil Jagielka, who earns £50,000 per week.
For context, that’s the same amount Arsenal are paying Calum Chambers, while the error-prone Serge Aurier is taking home £70,000 per week at Spurs.
It’s clear that the Sheffield club have vastly inferior financial resources at their disposal in comparison to the North London sides, and Crooks, who played for Tottenham, says that the chairmen at his former club and the Gunners ought to be a bit embarrassed that Wilder’s side are above them.
He said: “What a way to win a football match. A set-piece, a thundering header with no time for Wolves to respond. Two goals in as many games for John Egan took Sheffield United above Arsenal and Tottenham.
“If I was the chairman of either north London club I would be fuming considering the difference in wage bills compared with their Yorkshire rivals.”
Wilder’s side are one point above the Emirates Stadium club and two clear of Tottenham back in ninth – and it would be a tad odd and humiliating if it stays that way after 38 games.
