Most people would agree that Harry Kane is having a very good season with Tottenham Hotspur.
So far, Kane has scored 15 goals and set up another 13 in 19 games across all competitions.
If he stays fit, this could potentially be the 27-year-old’s best season at Tottenham – both in terms of goals, assists and, more importantly, honours.
Jose Mourinho’s side are top of the Premier League table ahead of tonight’s visit to champions Liverpool.
If you’d have asked Kane what his ideal scenario would be coming up to Christmas, this exact situation wouldn’t be far off it.
And yet Michael Owen has told talkSPORT’s Sports Breakfast Show this morning that he feels the England international is ‘frustrated’ under Mourinho over the fact he isn’t a traditional number nine anymore.
Owen said: “If I was Harry Kane I’d certainly be frustrated, thinking we play deep, we don’t get enough crosses and we’re not playing to my strengths. Results suggest at the moment that everything is quite rosy but if results don’t go well then as a top centre-forward you’re probably thinking, ‘hang on a minute, I’m not really built for this counter-attacking style’.
“Harry Kane’s much more of a number 10 this season. He’s assisting loads. Being at the sharp end of that team requires a lot of pace, a lot of running, multiple sprints and he’s not so young anymore.”
Who cares?
Mourinho has clearly tinkered with Kane’s role for the benefit of Tottenham and it’s so hard to argue that the team or player is suffering.
Mourinho’s job is to win trophies and given they’re well in the hunt for a Premier League, nobody – most of all Kane – from a Spurs perspective is going to give a fiddler’s if he doesn’t win the Golden Boot.
The player himself said earlier in 2020 that he would happily take a Premier League title over being the division’s highest-ever goalscorer, which pretty much sums up his priorities.
