Harry Maguire has been backed to leave Manchester United this summer amid rumoured interest from Newcastle United.
That’s the verdict of pundit Danny Murphy, who has been speaking to the Daily Mail about Maguire’s future at Old Trafford.
Murphy suggests that he would ‘amazed’ if Maguire didn’t leave the Red Devils this summer.
Murphy praised Maguire for still turning in fine displays for England despite not being a regular under Erik ten Hag.
Yet Murphy also feels that Maguire won’t be content with sitting on the bench all the time and may seek a summer exit.
“Maguire has so far defied the logic that you need to be a club regular to play well at a major tournament like the World Cup or Euros but Southgate would still prefer him to be doing more than warm the bench at Manchester United,” said Murphy.
“The defender has responded with great professionalism to dropping down the pecking order but he doesn’t strike me as someone comfortable on the sidelines. I’d be amazed if he’s not wearing another club shirt next season,” he added.
Maguire has started just five Premier League games this season and come on in another six.
The 30-year-old has only started seven games across other competitions too, struggling to nail down a spot in Ten Hag’s side.

Newcastle reportedly want Harry Maguire
Despite the up-and-down nature of Maguire’s career with Manchester United, there will be plenty of Premier League interest.
Maguire is an experienced top-flight defender who has shown his quality on numerous occasions in his career.
Some managers may believe that they can get Maguire back on track and Eddie Howe could be one of them.
90Min reported earlier this month that Newcastle United are interested in signing Maguire at the end of the season.
Howe has shown a tendency to focus on bringing Premier League experience to Newcastle.
Nick Pope, Dan Burn, Matt Targett, Kieran Trippier, Anthony Gordon and Chris Wood all fit that bill and had plenty of top-flight football under their belts before joining the Magpies.
Maguire may therefore fit what Howe is seeking at Newcastle and if the Red Devils are willing to do a deal, the England international could end up on Tyneside this summer.
