Former Dundee United ace Lee Wilkie believes the Old Firm clubs should be “all over” Benjamin Siegrist amid reported interest from Celtic, speaking to the Evening Telegraph.
If the Hoops really are interested in signing the former Aston Villa goalkeeper, Siegrist did his chances of a life-changing switch to one of Scotland’s bonafide big-hitters no harm at all on Sunday.
It was Siegrist’s man of the match performance that held Celtic to a 0-0 draw at Dundee United, making 12 saves as John Kennedy’s side finally surrendered the Premiership title.
It wasn’t Siegrist’s first virtuoso performance of the campaign either, with Blick reporting CSKA Moscow, Schalke and a number of Eredivisie sides are also interested in a 29-year-old who Celtic have been watching closely for some time.
“Siegrist has got it all. Siegrist, there’s no doubt about it, has been the player of the season,” Wilkie says.
“He’s a decent size, he’s got great reflexes and can move about the goal really well for a big lad.
“He’s got a bit of everything, plus his communication is excellent and he seems to have his head screwed on.
“If I was a manager of a team down south or the Old Firm, I’d be all over him.”
Speaking to the Daily Mail in December, Siegrist’s agent claimed Celtic had scouted him “several times”, adding the Swiss stopper would probably be tempted by a chance to join one of Glasgow’s giants.
Celtic’s interest raises questions, however, over the future of £5 million Vasilis Barkas after an underwhelming debut season in Scotland.
