Rangers boss Steven Gerrard will be hoping to close the gap on Celtic this season.

Lee McCulloch of Rangers celebrates after he scores during the Scottish Championship League Match between Rangers and Dumbarton, at Ibrox Stadium on August 23, 2014 Glasgow, Scotland.

Rangers legend Lee McCulloch outlined what he believes should be expected of Rangers under Steven Gerrard this season, when writing a column for the Glasgow Evening Times, suggesting that they quite simply must push Celtic all the way.

The Gers will be determined to prevent their bitter rivals from winning an eighth consecutive league title this season, but Gerrard certainly has his work cut-out at Ibrox.

The Rangers squad is quite clearly inferior to what Brendan Rodgers has at his disposal at Parkhead, and it would take a monumental effort from the Light Blues if they are to win the league this season.

McCulloch, who made 289 appearances for Rangers, insisted that his former club quite simply must close the gap on Celtic this summer, as well as winning some silverware, when writing his column for the Glasgow Evening Times:

“For me, all you can say right now is that they have to challenge Celtic and take it as far as possible. I think it is a tough ask for Rangers to win the league. Celtic will add to their double Treble side and will get even stronger and they will be looking to emulate what they have done over the last two seasons. So Rangers just have to look to push them all the way, and hopefully get a bit of silverware back in the cabinet as well. That would be progression for Steven Gerrard in his first campaign as a manager.”

Gerrard has already strengthened his squad at Ibrox this summer, but further additions will be necessary, if Rangers are to mount a sustained challenge for the Scottish Premiership title this season.

Even if the Liverpool legend does bring in reinforcements, it would take a brave man to bet against Celtic making it eight league titles in a row this season.

Steven Gerrard is unveiled as the new manager of Rangers football Club at Ibrox Stadium on May 4, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.
