Barry Ferguson believes Derek McInnes is perfect for the Rangers job.
Blackpool manager Barry Ferguson
Rangers hero Barry Ferguson has told BBC Sport that he thinks Aberdeen’s Derek McInnes is the perfect man to replace Mark Warburton.
Warburton left his post as Gers boss earlier this month, with Rangers accepting his resignation along with assistant boss David Weir and recruitment chief Frank McParland.
Whilst the search is on for a new manager, youth coach Graeme Murty has been placed in charge of the first team on a temporary basis, and has overseen successive 2-1 away defeats at Dundee and Inverness Caledonian Thistle.
It’s already clear that Murty – who has now managerial experience – isn’t quite ready for the Rangers job on a full-time basis, leaving fans to consider other names.
A host of ex-Rangers men, such as Billy Davies, Frank de Boer and even Gennaro Gattuso, have been linked with the post, whilst cold water has been poured on speculation surrounding an Ibrox return for Barry Ferguson.
In charge of fourth-tier Clyde since the summer of 2014, Ferguson resigned from his post on Sunday amid rumours of a return to Rangers, having made almost 450 appearances for the club as a player, but he won’t be taking the job.
Instead, Ferguson has offered his view – again – on who should be appointed as the club’s new manager, having seemingly changed his mind since telling BBC Sport that his former Rangers, Birmingham and Scotland boss Alex McLeish was the man for the job.
Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes
Ferguson has now told BBC Sport that he doesn’t think McLeish – or the aforementioned Davies – would take the job temporarily, and believes Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes, who played for Rangers as a midfielder, would be the perfect appointment given his record with Aberdeen and his record in Scotland.
“I don’t think an Alex McLeish or a Billy Davies would come in and take it short term,” said Ferguson. “I think they would want a guarantee that it would be a bit longer. I think it’s important they just take their time and get the right guy. The guy for me [would be] Derek McInnes. But they are not going to get Derek probably until the end of the season.”
“He’s the perfect guy for the job. He’s done an unbelievable job up at Aberdeen and he suits Rangers down to a tee. He knows the club. He’s a good manager. Him and ‘Doc’ [Dons assistant boss Tony Docherty] have done a great job up there,” he added.
