Jermain Defoe has raved about his imminent new Rangers teammate Calvin Bassey on Rangers TV.

The Rangers striker has said that he is excited by the potential of Bassey, who is joining the Gers in the summer transfer window.

The 20-year-old defender – who can operate as a centre-back or as a left-back – has signed a pre-contract with Rangers and will move to the Ibrox club on a four-year deal after leaving Leicester City in the Premier League.

Defoe, who played for West Ham United and Tottenham Hotspur among other clubs in England, has raved about the potential of the youngster.

Defoe told Rangers TV, as transcribed by The Daily Record: “Calvin Bassey, I’m looking forward to him coming up.

“I’ve seen some clips of him and obviously there was the friendly game at Ibrox last season that he played in so great potential.”

Good signing for Rangers?

Bassey does not have any experience in the first team, and it is hard to see the youngster establish himself in the Rangers senior side straightaway.

The youngster is a player for the long term and is one for the future, but he will provide valuable cover at centre-back and at left-back.

The 20-year-old will give Rangers manager Steven Gerrard a valuable option on the substitutes’ bench and will add to the depth of the squad.
