Manchester United star Zlatan Ibrahimovic has told Sky Sports that both Arsenal and Manchester City tried to bring him to the Premier League before his move to Old Trafford in the summer transfer window.
The Sweden star joined Jose Mourinho’s side this summer following the end of his deal with Paris Saint-Germain.
He has been an immediate hit in Manchester, with three goals in the league already and a winning strike in the Community Shield.
His move to England means he has now played in all but one of the major leagues in the world, having played in Spain, Italy and France across his career.
Some believe the switch has come several years too late, and he says that both Arsenal and Manchester City did try to bring him to the Premier League sooner.
“I was close to moving to the Premier League twice – once with Arsenal and then Manchester City but it never happened,” he told Sky Sports.
“Mourinho is the mastermind, the master brain. He knows what he needs to do to win. I learned a lot from him at Inter. Who wouldn’t want to have Mourinho as manager?”
On the evidence provided so far, both of those clubs will be desperately sorry that they never managed to tempt Ibrahimovic to join them.
Arsenal, in particular, will be casting jealous glances, having lacked that superstar striker in their side for a number of years.
If he continues to impress as he has, and potentially lead Mourinho’s side to a title challenge, then that sense of regret is only likely grow.
