Everton, Manchester City, Stoke City, Sunderland and Tottenham Hotspur feature.
It was an incredible weekend for both the Premier League and the FA Cup as there were some eye-catching performances and results in both competitions but there were some equally baffling decisions and displays from certain individuals and groups.
You wonder why certain players were selected, and question the decisions made by the players out on the field.
So, here is a look at those who we can regard as villains from this weekend’s action.
The Tottenham defence
0-0 at half time against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge and not a lot was really happening. Spurs were well set to go on and at least get something from the game, but what followed was a diabolical display.
The slip and back pass from Jan Vertonghen started it all off to let Samuel Eto’o open the scoring, Younes Kaboul was sent off for a foul on Eto’o – even if it did look soft to say the least. A slip from Sandro allowed Demba Ba to score the third and the Senegalese striker must have thought it was Christmas when Kyle Walker decided to head the ball to him.
Martin Demichelis
In all fairness, you could probably put a few people from City’s back line, and the manager for his team selection in as villains, here but Demichelis has made yet another blunder that has cost City when he brought down Marc-Antoine Fortune which gave Wigan Athletic the platform to upset City for the second time in as many seasons in the FA Cup.
Lee Cattermole
It was always going to be a difficult task for Sunderland to beat Hull City after a big effort in the League Cup final last week – and an even bigger effort after they fell behind to a Curtis Davies header. But Lee Cattermole didn’t help his side as his errors cost Sunderland twice in their 3-0 defeat to Hull City, meaning there will be no second trip to Wembley this season for the Black Cats.
Gareth Barry
Barry has been pretty reliable in the Everton midfield this season but his mistake in the cup defeat to Arsenal was quite telling, even if the Gunners did run away with it afterwards.
Barry just couldn’t resist having a second go at challenging Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in the penalty area which gave Mikel Arteta the chance to put Arsenal in front midway through the second half, leaving Everton’s ambitions of ending their 19 year wait for a trophy in tatters.
Jonathan Walters
Hero or villain? Well, for rediscovering his ability to take penalties in recent weeks he is the former, but the effect that Walters’s actions had after his equaliser could mean he is a villain.
His high challenge on Alexander Tettey meant that the striker was given his marching orders in Stoke City’s 1-1 draw against Norwich City. Will he be missed as Stoke try and secure their top flight status?
