If you read the latest news on Harry Kane, the chances are that you will find the phrase ‘goal drought’ pretty close to it.

This time last year if you read the news on the player, the chances you will have found the same phrase as well.

This year they have more of a case for justifying that phrase attached to the Tottenham Hotspur striker. Last year he managed to find the net for his country during his scoreless run with his club. This year he is coming into the season off the back of a European Championships where he struggled to find any sort of form as England were embarrassingly dumped out by Iceland.

But still, if he follows the same kind of pattern as last season – where he did not score for Spurs until late September, and the Daily Mail headlined with the forward ending a ‘goal drought’ in the 4-1 win over Manchester City – then the chances are it is going to be another productive season for Kane.

While the season may have started with talk of goal droughts and dips in form, his goals – 25 of them in the Premier League – helped propel Tottenham into the title race and secure Champions League football for the following season.

Another month until he found the net with a hat-trick against Bournemouth produced more headlines about a goal drought with his boss Mauricio Pochettino quoted in the Evening Standard last October saying it had made the forward stronger.

A lot of fuss seems to be made whenever a talented striker is going through a run without scoring, though at the same time everyone is pretty safe in the knowledge that the 23-year-old is one of the most feared players in the league when he finds his scoring streak.

Plenty of good strikers have periods where they are not scoring goals, though a slow start to the season might be a pattern to look out for when it comes to Kane.

But the scary fact is that he is 23, and 30 goals a season is not out of the ordinary. Meaning now that a small run of games without a goal will equate to a drought.

In truth it doesn’t. He might have had a slight dip in form since the end of last season but the chances are he could still win the golden boot come May.
