Denayer featured in the under-23 game with Rochdale on Tuesday night.

Sunderland defender Jason Denayer feels he is ready to be given an opportunity in the first-team following his participation in the under-23 side’s game with Rochdale in the Checkatrade trophy.
Denayer was signed on the final day of the transfer window from Manchester City on loan as David Moyes looked to strengthen at the heart of his defence.

The Belgian is quoted in the Chronicle, saying: “There were a lot of long balls in the game – it was like a throwback in some ways. But physically, I am really well – 100%, I am good.
“I just need to adapt to what the club wants, and that is what I need to do to improve right now.”
The minutes under his belt will certainly be welcome for both him and manager Moyes, although he may be a little reluctant to throw into the action against Everton on Monday night, given the lack of first-team football he has had in recent times.

Denayer faces competition in the form of Lamine Kone and fellow summer arrival at the Stadium of Light Papy Djilobodji.
The 21-year-old will be keen to get as much playing time as possible this season in order to build up his experience and develop as a player.

Under David Moyes he will be playing for a manager that likes his back line to remain solid and tight – making it very difficult for opponents to score in the process. In many ways it could prove to be a very good move for the young Belgian – who also has John O’Shea vying for a spot in the side. With that mix of defenders, Denayer will do very well to establish himself with the Black Cats.
