Sunderland went down to another defeat, this time against West Ham United at the weekend.
Sunderland midfielder Jack Rodwell has bemoaned a lack of concentration as they went down to another defeat at the weekend, the Sunderland Echo reports.
The Black Cats conceded a stoppage-time winner at the hands of West Ham United to leave them bottom of the table after nine Premier League games, with just the two points; five points adrift of safety.
Rodwell suggests that a lot of the side’s shortcomings so far this season have been down to a lack of concentration.
The midfielder is quoted in the Sunderland Echo, saying: “The goal was nothing to do with ability, it was purely concentration.
“It was switching off, free on the edge, a shot at goal and it is inevitable in the Premier League. If you do that then it is going to happen.”
The timing of the goal as Winston Reid struck home from distance was a real killer for Sunderland. They will have had high hopes of, at the very least, stopping the rot in fixtures against sides that were struggling towards the bottom not so long ago, but instead have come away with two more defeats.
Sunderland’s concentration has let them down this season, that is one thing Rodwell is right about, but failure to learn from errors of their own making has also been a huge contributing factor to the situation they currently find themselves in.
Lack of goals at the other end of the field and defensive cohesion as a whole has done nothing to help the side. If Sunderland had a little more concentration in games against Palace and Southampton – where they led games – maybe their predicament would not be as worrying as it is currently.
