Stats: When did Liverpool get into the scoring groove?

There was a moment when it seemed to click for the Reds.

There has been one notable aspect about how Brendan Rodgers has changed the way Liverpool play during his time as manager, and that’s the amount of goals that the side scores.

The Reds struggled for goals during the early days of his spell but this season the side has scored 96 goals and only three sides have managed to keep clean sheets against them. Those sides are proving to be exceptions to the rule with very impressive defensive displays.

The season before Rodgers arrived, the Reds only scored 47 goals under Kenny Dalglish, the following season they scored 71. So when did things really start to click in front of goal for Liverpool?

Only 11 players fired in front of goal during the first half of last season and the side was heavily reliant on the exploits of Luis Suarez in front of goal as the Reds only found the net on 28 occasions.

But during the second half of the season, with the acquisitions of Philippe Coutinho and Daniel Sturridge, there was a bit more firepower to Liverpool, and ended up scoring 43 goals in 19 games.

Ten players scored in the second half of the Premier League season for the Reds, and the goalscoring was shared around a bit more. Whilst Suarez still topped the scoring charts for the Reds in the second half of the last campaign, more came from other players.

There is also notably more goals coming from the midfield as well with Jordan Henderson adding goals to his game in the second half of the season during the last campaign.

This season, the side is currently averaging 2.67 goals per game, having scored on 96 occasions in 36 matches.

Whilst the two usual suspects have been scoring goals for fun and have 50 between them, the rest of the side has chipped in, including Martin Skrtel from centre-half. It does show there are goals throughout the team, and it all seemed to have clicked in the middle of last season.

It seemed Liverpool were doing something right early on and just needed the personnel to click and members of the squad to step up. It’ll be interesting to see what happens on the scoring front if they keep on improving.
