Rodgers on Sturridge injury and title race pressure

Brendan Rodgers addressed the media ahead of his side’s trip to Norwich City on Sunday lunchtime

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has said the hamstring injury sustained by striker Daniel Sturridge is not too serious but he may struggle for this weekend’s trip to Norwich City.

Sturridge limped from the field during Liverpool’s 3-2 win over Manchester City on Sunday, and the club is giving the player ‘every opportunity’ for him to be fit for the match at Carrow Road.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference, Rodgers said: “It’s not too serious. It’s not going to keep him out for too many weeks but he may be a risk for the weekend but we’ll assess it more over the next couple of days.

“He may well make a really good recovery over the next few days and be ready for the weekend. But at this moment in time we’re just assessing him and see how he goes because he does recover very quickly.”

The Northern Irishman has said that his side will deal with being favourites for the title in the same way they have dealt with every game this season.

Liverpool are currently two points clear of Chelsea with four games to go, in the knowledge that if they win their remaining games they will win the title for the first time in 24 years.

Rodgers added: “We still look to win the game at the weekend, we are still in check with reality in terms of where we’re at. We’ve made great progress this season and our objective to qualify for the Champions League was always going to be a very difficult one.

“If we can get a win at the weekend that would rubber stamp that for us.”

The Liverpool boss said results in the Premier League from last night – Manchester City’s draw against Sunderland and Everton’s defeat to Crystal Palace – is a warning sign that with four games remaining in the season that nothing is guaranteed.

Rodgers added that Steven Gerrard getting the team into a huddle after the win over City last weekend ‘encapsulated the message’ that he has been giving all season.

“It was great that Stevie directly after the game was pulling the players together and saying ‘it’s the next game’, and the next game is Norwich.”
