Pelle looks set for a move to China, and no forward seems to be heading to St Mary’s to replace him as of yet.
Southampton are not planning on signing a new striker this summer as things stand, despite the seemingly imminent departure of Graziano Pelle, according to the Daily Echo.
They report that last season’s signing of Charlie Austin in January was the long-term replacement for the Italian as they clearly anticipated he would depart St Mary’s this summer.
Pelle is expected to complete a £13 million move to Chinese side Shandong Luneng on a three-year deal in the very near future.
Aside from Pelle there is still a healthy number of striking options available to manager Claude Puel. Shane Long and Jay Rodriguez will no doubt be used frequently going into the new season while Puel can also call upon Sam Gallagher and Ryan Seager.
A lot of it may depend on the way that Puel will want to play if the situation surrounding forwards changes, but given what he has available right now, he does have the options to play with either one or two up front from the start of games.
One thing that Southampton may lack by not trying to buy a replacement for Pelle is the presence that he offered to the side going forward; although again that will depend on how the new Saints boss wants to play and whether he wants that option up front going into his first campaign.
