There were suggestions that Michael Carrick was set to leave Manchester United.
Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick will be offered a new contract at the club after the appointment of Jose Mourinho as the club’s manager has been confirmed, following the departure of Louis van Gaal yesterday, according to a report in the Times.
There has been a lot of speculation surrounding the future of the 34-year-old, but the Times reports that a new deal will be offered to him despite interest from China, although he may have to take a pay cut.
That is viewed as ‘not insurmountable’ according to the report, which suggests that a testimonial could be offered to him.
Carrick was part of the side that won the FA Cup in a 2-1 win over Crystal Palace after extra time on Saturday, and he has had a glittering career at Old Trafford since his arrival from Tottenham in 2006, winning five Premier League titles, the Champions League, two League Cups and now the famous old trophy.
Although it is unlikely he would play every game under Jose Mourinho, he nevertheless would provide both useful experience and would get his fair share of time on the field with United trying to compete on four fronts – especially with the club facing the regular Thursday to Sunday match turnaround given their commitments in the Europa League next season.
It will be interesting to see just how many games Carrick will play next season if he does sign a new deal at the club, as one would expect there to be major transfer activity at Old Trafford this summer as they look to return to the Champions League at the very least.
