Can has been sidelined since picking up an ankle injury in a League Cup win over Burton.

Liverpool midfielder Emre Can is expected to be fit for Friday night’s trip to Chelsea in the Premier League, according to a report from the Liverpool Echo.

Can missed both Liverpool’s draw with Tottenham Hotspur and the win over Leicester City at the weekend because of an ankle injury picked up in the EFL Cup win over Burton Albion.

It is unclear whether the German, who was a big part of the side during the second half of last season, will be able to force his way into the starting XI on Friday night given how well Liverpool’s midfield has functioned in the past two league games.

Jordan Henderson seems to be growing into the role as the deeper midfielder of a trio which also consists of Adam Lallana and Georginio Wijnaldum. Lallana has had an impressive start to the season which has seen him find the net twice for the Reds and get off the mark for England, while Wijnaldum also impressed in the weekend’s win over Leicester.

As a result, there is surely temptation on the part of manager Jurgen Klopp to operate with the same midfield trio for Chelsea.

The Echo’s report says that Can could play a part at Chelsea if he suffers no adverse effects to treatment between now and Friday.

If that is the case, then one would think he would be used from the bench and perhaps given a start in the EFL Cup game against Derby County the following Tuesday if all goes to plan.

Nevertheless, it is welcome for Liverpool to have another potentially key player available and increase competition for places in the side. It seems that Klopp has many good players at his disposal this season, with a couple of options to rotate as the season goes on.
