Torres signed for the Reds nine years ago in a deal worth just over £20 million.
It is fair to say that Liverpool had the best years of Fernando Torres at Liverpool. He signed for the Reds on 4 July 2007 from Atletico Madrid for a fee of £20.2 million, according to LFC History.
It is incredible to think that despite the reputation he came with, one enhanced during his time on Merseyside, that he would not win a trophy with the club. Instead his team success came at international level in both the European Championship and the World Cup.
He came close in 2008 when the Reds reached the Champions League semi-final, only to be knocked out by Chelsea, when Liverpool finished second in the Premier League the following season, and in 2010 when they were knocked out of the Europa League by Atletico Madrid at the semi-final stage in extra time as he and Steven Gerrard were a potent attacking force under Rafa Benitez’s management.
His goal-scoring record for the Reds was impeccable, as he scored 81 times from 142 appearances for the club before he left for Chelsea in a record breaking £50 million deal, shortly after Kenny Dalglish had taken charge following a disastrous six-month spell under Roy Hodgson.
His first appearance would be against Liverpool – one of eight against the Reds where he failed to find the net – and it was an unhappy reunion for him as Liverpool were 1-0 winners at Stamford Bridge.
As his career in terms of goals took a nose dive following his Liverpool departure, he did pick up silverware at Chelsea in the form of the Champions League, FA Cup and UEFA Cup before having a brief loan spell with Milan.
That did not work out so he returned to Atletico Madrid – where he was part of the side that made the Champions League final last season – only to lose on penalties to Real Madrid.
Despite leaving the club in the circumstances he did, there still remains a genuine fondness for the Spaniard on the red half of Merseyside.
