It was one of the most memorable moments of a terrific summer tournament when England and Scotland met at Wembley during Euro 96.
With both sides only managing to draw their opening games, there was a little bit of extra significance when the two sides met under the shadow of the twin towers as they tried to do everything they can to set themselves up for a simple job in their final group game in order to secure their passage to the quarter-finals.
It was a quiet first half with the scoreline remaining goalless at the break but England struck early on in the second half when Alan Shearer headed home Gary Neville’s cross.
Scotland had the opportunity to level the game after they were awarded a penalty, only for Gary McAllister to see his spot-kick saved by David Seaman.
Shortly after – and with the game entering its closing stages – arguably the most memorable moment of the tournament occurred with an individual piece of brilliance from Paul Gascoigne as he flicked it over one defender before volleying the ball home. It is one of those moments that football fans never seem to tire of seeing, unless you are from Scotland of course.
