An array of goalkeepers at Newcastle United means there is plenty of competition for now.
Newcastle United goalkeeper Matz Sels has said he plans to learn from the other goalkeepers at the club while ensuring he is at the front of the queue when it comes to game time.
Sels signed from Gent for around £5 million and is one of many ‘keepers at the club, but after a season where he was named the Belgian goalkeeper of the year, the 24-year-old is determined to be the number one while acknowledging that others at the club can help him improve.
He is quoted by the Chronicle, saying: “There is competition but I think that is the same at any big club. You know there will be quality and it’s no different here at Newcastle.
“I want to show what I can do and I know that at 24 that I am here not just to play, but to learn as well, from the other goalkeepers and the goalkeeper coach Simon Smith.”
Certainly there is an array of goalkeeping talent on the books at Newcastle at the moment. Tim Krul is well regarded and is coming back from a knee injury, along with Rob Elliot, while Karl Darlow filled in during the closing stages of the last season.
It remains to be seen just how many of those goalkeepers will be at the club come the end of the transfer window, as one would think that four ‘keepers with first-team experience would be a bit too much for any club, even if there are a lot of games to play in the upcoming season.
One would think that Sels will be starting the season tomorrow night at Craven Cottage when Newcastle take on Fulham as the first choice goalkeeper, otherwise many would be scratching their head wondering why Rafa Benitez felt the need to go out and buy him.
