Elliot suffered an ACL injury while on international duty with the Republic of Ireland.

Newcastle United goalkeeper Rob Elliot has told the Chronicle that he got over the ACL injury he sustained during last season pretty quickly mentally.
The goalkeeper updated the same publication on his timetable to return to fitness yesterday, saying he should be able to return in the next few weeks.
Elliot was in excellent form last season for the Magpies before he sustained the injury while on international duty for the Republic of Ireland. He made 22 appearances for his club last season, but in his interview with the Chronicle he seems grateful for his opportunities last season despite missing out on the rest of the campaign and a possible place at Euro 2016.

He said: “I was really proud of everything that happened before that. I did my ACL while I was playing regularly for Newcastle in the Premier League and Ireland. I couldn’t have asked for a better situation to be in.
“If it was going to happen, at least it did while I was showing everybody what I could do.”
Elliot also spoke about missing out on the chance to carry his son out for the following game against Crystal Palace – where he was the mascot – and for a short spell wondering when he would play again.

Injuries like that can be very difficult to recover from, but the 30-year-old seems pretty positive about things, and it looks as though there could be a good battle to be the number one goalkeeper for Rafa Benitez’s side when Elliot returns to fitness.
Matz Sels was bought in the summer and has played several games so far, while Karl Darlow was the man trusted between the sticks in Elliot’s absence towards the end of last season and has since returned to the starting XI this term.
