Redmond was previously compared to Arsenal legend Thierry Henry by Claude Puel.
Southampton’s Nathan Redmond celebrates scoring their first goal
Southampton’s Nathan Redmond seems to relishing the task of playing up front for the club but laughed off comparisons to Thierry Henry, the Daily Echo reports.
Redmond, who signed in the summer from Norwich City, has been used mostly as a wide player during his career thus far, but the 22-year-old seems to be relishing the task of playing in a more central role – which paid off at the weekend as he got the equalising goal in the 1-1 draw with Watford.
Southampton’s Nathan Redmond reacts
He’s quoted saying: “When the gaffer proposed about maybe playing up front I said ‘yeah I can give it a go’.
“Since I started playing there in pre-season he’s obviously liked what he’s seen and I’ve felt pretty comfortable playing there.
“He’s given me different options as to runs I should make when we’ve got the ball and how to balance off Dusan [Tadic] and Longy (Shane Long).
“To not really be specific to a set position but to keep moving. That’s what makes it hard for teams to pick me up and pick other players up.”
Southampton’s Nathan Redmond applauds fans at the end of the match
Certainly a fluid attacking set-up can make it very difficult for opposition defences if it’s executed correctly, and the pace that Redmond provides is integral to that along with busy work and technical ability surrounding him.
It seems that Puel wants his players to be versatile in the final third and feel comfortable both out wide and through the middle.
Redmond was loosely compared to Henry by Puel for his ability to finish and his pace in the side but if he can even show flickers of the class that the Arsenal legend possessed then he will prove to be a fine signing for the Saints.
