Ejaria and Alexander-Arnold made their first starts at Anfield in the 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur in the EFL Cup.
Liverpool’s Lucas Leiva found time to praise the performances of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Ovie Ejaria after they started last night’s EFL Cup win over Tottenham Hotspur in an interview the official Liverpool website.
Ejaria had featured as a substitute in the previous round of the competition against Derby County last month, while Alexander-Arnold made his first appearance.
Lucas told liverpoolfc.com: “They are fantastic players. They are very young and still learning, but they are very good boys and they have already improved a lot since they started with us.
“They have a brilliant future ahead of them and hopefully it will be here at Liverpool.”
An example of the players being young and still learning was Alexander-Arnold’s challenge on Ben Davies which brought the teenager a yellow card.
Nevertheless, he impressed for the hour he was out on the field, and showed that there is some sort of cover for Nathaniel Clyne in that area if necessary.
Ejaria showed some great composure and a couple of nice touches. Of course, there is still a long way to go before one can think about either becoming an established first-team player at Anfield, but they held their own on their full debuts. Playing in front of 53,000 fans is a crucial step up for both players.
It is always uplifting for supporters to see younger players handed an opportunity to play, and one fancies that both players will get more opportunities in the near future.
