Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva believes a strong home record for the Reds will be key to whether they can have a good season or not.

The Reds make their first appearance at Anfield on Saturday evening when they take on Leicester City, following on from three Premier League games on the road as well as one in the EFL Cup.

The Brazilian told the club’s official website: “Every year, the teams that have a very good record at home challenge for titles and the top four, so it’s very important that we do that this year – starting with the first game.”

Liverpool have picked up four points from their opening three games which has seen them beat Arsenal and draw with Tottenham, but there was a disappointing defeat to Burnley sandwiched in between.

A win against Leicester would represent a pretty solid start to the league season with all things considered, ahead of another big away game the following week when the Reds travel to Stamford Bridge to take on Chelsea.

Lucas added: “It [beating Leicester] would give us confidence to go away from home against Chelsea and try to get the three points. We just need to focus and work hard and with the quality we have, I think we can do it.”

Liverpool have not been beaten at home since January, but they will want to improve on their home record which saw them drop points to sides they will feel they ought to have beaten.

West Bromwich Albion, Newcastle, Sunderland, Norwich City and Crystal Palace were all among the sides that left Anfield with something to show for their efforts last season. These are the kind of games Liverpool will feel they need to win this season in order to challenge for a place in next year’s Champions League or more.

There were signs of improvement in their home form last season, but Liverpool need to get off to a good start this weekend, and show a ruthless streak throughout the campaign in order to succeed.
