There seems to be no respite for Manchester United manager David Moyes at the moment.
It has been a horrific first season in charge at Old Trafford for the Scot. Having been anointed as the successor to Sir Alex Ferguson to carry on a glorious era, it has gone spectacularly wrong.
Humiliating defeats to Liverpool and Manchester City is stark proof that the fear factor his predecessor had developed at Old Trafford has evaporated.
Further home defeats to West Bromwich Albion, Everton, Newcastle and Tottenham only add to that misery.
It has been a record breaking season for the wrong reasons as sides have ended their hoodoo’s away to Manchester United. They have been dumped out of the League Cup by Sunderland in the semi-finals on penalties, as well as being humbled at home by Swansea City in the FA Cup to go along with their poor league form that has left their domestic campaign in tatters. Their hopes of succeeding in the Champions League against Bayern Munich are looking extraordinarily slim, which seemingly remains their only route into Europe’s premier competition for next season.
But now, even the local media are seemingly having fun at the expense of the Old Trafford boss with the Manchester Evening News launching the David Moyes excuse generator.
Such excuses include: “I don’t what we have to do to win. I thought we were extremely unlucky.”
And: “I felt as if the players looked in good shape and good fettle going into it but we just didn’t get to the standards that were required.”
The local media in Liverpool have also launched it – as those on Merseyside are currently rejoicing in the decline of Manchester United with both Liverpool, and Moyes’s former club Everton, are on course to finish above them this season.
